Phototropism is the word used in biology to describe the movement of plants towards the light. This is a vital process for vegetation as it allows them to optimise the photosynthetic process.

I was thinking about this the other day and wondered whether the spiritual impulse of human beings is too different.

We are drawn to states of bliss and transcendence, whether it be through very physical acts such as sex, alcohol or drugs or through spiritual practices and experiences such as meditation or prayer. Either way there seems to be a deeply human impulse to transcend the everyday waking state and seek light.

No one can deny the importance that Jungian psychology has had in outlining the importance of engaging with our shadow and integrating the darker elements of our psyche, but I think there is also a risk in the New Age Capitalistic model of attaching too much to our suffering and creating identities based upon the hurt and damaged aspects of ourselves. In doing so we position ourselves as victims; reliant on others for our healing.

The Buddha advised his followers to ‘Be a lamp unto yourself’. He encouraged scepticism and the questioning of any principles that did not sit well with the self. I think the metaphor of a lamp is also fitting.

When we can align ourselves with truth, love and wisdom we shine a light on the path for ourselves but we also become luminescent for others. No doubt it is necessary sometimes to work through traumatic experiences that block our access to joy but I think it’s important to remember that the purpose of this work is to reengage with life, bliss and joy. Life is a continual balance between light and dark, we must not deny either but I think like our plant life, even submerged in dirt, we should raise our eyes to all that is light.
